It has bought up surrounding hotels and built others, creating a veritable Disney city at the once isolated site that has now been swallowed up by the creeping spread of the Los Angeles area.
They include traditional Disney themed attractions as well as an array of stomach-churning roller coasters and other rides.
While just one dollar would have gotten you into the magic kingdom in 1955, the cheapest day ticket in 2005 will set visitors back 56 dollars.
But some of the original 1950s attractions are still going strong, including its famed mini-railway and a Mark Twainstyle paddle boat.
The park has sprawned an offshoot, “Disney California Adventure,” which was born in 2001 alongside the original as the worldwide competition among theme parks reached an all-time high before the industry was badly dented by the September 11, 2001 terror attacks.
Once reflection of the movie studio, Disneyland snowballed into a huge business that is an integral part of the Disney empire.
The company opened a second park Disneyworld, in Florida in 1971, added the Epcot Center on the same site in 1982 and opened Disney MGM Studios in 1989 and Disney's Animal Kingdom in 1998.
And in 1983 it opened Disneyland Tokyo in Japan , followed in 1992 by Euro Disney in France , later rechristened Disneyland Paris, while Disneyland Hong Kong is scheduled to open in the Chinese territory in September.
