- Next time you book a hotel, find out about its phone surcharges. If they are higher than in other hotels and you make long-distance calls, any savings from lower room rates can be wiped out.
- Think before making call, and talk concisely. If you have to explain or discuss complex matters, consider sending your message by fax.
- If you have to call your office, use a pay phone and ask for a return call to your room.
- If possible, have prearranged times when you can call your office and vice versa.
- Consider using a telephone charged card. While there's still a surcharge if you use a card for calls from your hotel room, it will be far less than the hotel's normal fee.
