Restoration of Banaue Rice Terraces begins
QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA—Typhoon-damaged portions of the world-famous Banaue rice terraces will soon undergo rehabilitation under a P36 million project.
One of the focus areas in the restoration works will be on Batad in Ifugao, where some 38 paddies collapsed during the onslaught of typhoons Pedring and Quiel last year. Total damages in crops, livestock and infrastructure is pegged at P872 million.
The project will involve three major components-production, extension and agricultural infrastructure supports, according to the Department of Agriculture (DA), the lead agency for the project.
Under the project, close to 8,700 cubic meters of eroded stone walls will be restored and 2.5 kilometers of irrigation system, which covers 106 hectares of rice paddies, will be rehabilitated, said DA Cordillera regional technical director Dr. Danilo Daguio.
Some 25 hectares of watershed will also be reforested, while forest cover in 12 hectares of pinugo or communal forests will be increased.
The project will also require establishment of community seed banks, and soil and water conservation measures.
Extension support activities will include technology demonstration for farm mechanization, establishment of rice-based farming systems, conduct of farmer field schools, and strengthening of rural-based organizations.
Besides rehabilitating damaged and abandoned rice terraces, there will be construction of protection walls and cobble stone solar dryers. Irrigation facilities and hydraulic ram pumps will be added.
A farm-to-market road component is also being eyed to add for funding to their initiatives of intensifying information, education and campaign activities, said Daguio.
DA will cover P23.89 million of the total project amount to restore irrigation infrastructure and footpaths that were damaged.
The National Irrigation Administration, Philippine Rice Research Institute, Department of Social Welfare and Development, provincial and municipal local government officials of Ifugao will also be part of the project.
